At our book club meeting last Saturday, we tried something new—discussing a book that we had all read. While we usually explore broader topics, genres, or authors, this time we focused on R.F. Kuang’s "Yellowface" and the conversation did not disappoint.

Our discussion covered the novel’s strengths and weaknesses, with particular attention to the moments that felt less convincing. At the same time, we found it fascinating to dive deeper into the publishing industry, a central theme of the book. The novel’s portrayal of literary gatekeeping, authorial identity, and the ethics of storytelling gave us plenty to reflect on.
This shift in format sparked a lively and engaging conversation, leaving us curious about whether we should incorporate more single-book discussions in the future. As always, the meeting was a reminder of how much we can learn—not just from the books we read, but from each other’s perspectives.
We also welcomed a new book club member, and everyone went home with a little surprise for the next time they settled in with a book and a cup of tea.
